James (Jim) Devereaux was introduced to the hardwood lumber business by his father who was a farmer and operator of a small portable mill. In 1947, Jim and his two brothers partnered together to own and operate Oakley Hardwoods, a sawmill located in Oakley, Michigan. After working together for nearly 20 years with his brothers, in 1967, Jim decided to open his own mill, Devereaux Sawmill, in Pewamo, Michigan. Originally, the sawmill consisted of a circle mill that sold green lumber to wholesalers and concentration yards in Michigan. In 1976, Jim added the company’s first kilns as well as its first planing mill.
In 1978, Jim’s son, Bruce, took over operation of the sawmill and remains the President of the company today. During his tenure, Bruce has broadened the original business with equipment additions, technological advancements, and facility expansions. Bruce’s two sons, Brandon and Craig, have assumed active positions within the organization and have played integral roles in the company’s success.
Today, Devereaux Sawmill, Inc. is one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of quality Michigan Hardwoods. The scope of the original business continues to expand with the recent additions of a 60 bin sorter, rip saw operation, and 110 cart kiln dried processing line. The company looks to service the most discerning customers with exacting specifications for widths, lengths, color, manufacture, surfacing, ripping, packaging, and more. Our base of satisfied customers extends through the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East and includes buyers from industries such as flooring, cabinets, furniture, millwork, and more.
